Coming from Northern Ireland, you can see that so much of our problems are those of the human condition: greed: ill-will, and delusion (forgive my amateur Buddhism—I'm not a Buddhist). Or, to put it simply, buckshyte dangerous people (excuse my Irish) who haven't grown up and recognised that this is a shared world. Look at Putin, Trump, Johnson, Netanyahu, Corbyn, the Democratic Unionist Party AND Sinn Fein, and see what they have in common. All so darned unnecessary especially when you see all the really important things we need to be dealing with. The fact that capitalism clearly isn't working (or at least not for the vast majority AND is yielding disproportionate and unaccountable power to a very few, to whom most politicians lack the fibre to call out or challenge and an increasingly acquiescent media), the risks to the planet, and the appaling lack of accountability on the internet. The Labour Party has (l hope) a golden opportunity to front out and tackle these issues. I hope it has the necessary underpinning, courage and guile required.

thankyou for another well written and incisive piece , Alain. Perhaps a future piece might address a comparison with the lack of permitted internal debate and democratic accountability in the rest of the Middle East , not least in countries where religious fundamentalism remains plainly in evidence and exported.
