I should add that when I referred to the Hillsborough Stadium cover-up in my initial comment that I was not in any way trying to minimise police responsibility, or the unbearable loss and suffering caused to the victims' families.

My point was that the police clearly bore a heavy responsibility for the things that went wrong but in what was a 'dynamic' situation. Their subsequent evasive behaviour was even worse.

Whereas: in the post office's case they had a duty, opportunity, and responsibility, to check the evidence was sound beforehand. And, as soon as they had any uncertainty, to investigate and redress.

Your subsequent revelations about bonuses and 'plum' postings does not surprise me in the slightest. It is, sadly, the nature of the human condition.

Unfortunately I am not a qualified journalist so apologise for any offence or hurt caused by my lack of skill.

As a retired Metropolitan Police officer I grew accustomed to stories like this: within and without the police service. But this case is massive and shocking. I never witnessed anything like this in the police service—even the Hillsborough Stadium disgrace was not of this magnitude because that was post the event and the police were not responsible for the cause of the crime.

Those involved must be brought to justice and proper compensation awarded to the victims. Not in the usual British manner, as in the contaminated blood scandal, left to fester for years while the victims endure such enormous pain.
