Given that what you say about Russia is probably true then the west must surely continue to support Ukraine and double down in doing so. Europe is not Korea. Russia would not be what it is without tacit support from a lot of its own people. Change will only happen when the time is right and when enough Russians realise that only they can change their situation and have the means to do so: unlikely to happen because of the entrenchment of Putin and his like!

Best we reduce our costs by increasing our spending in support of Ukraine, imposing even harder sanctions and continually applying the thumbscrews. Letting Russia know they can go no further—anywhere!

I'd lay money that had we stood up against Russia in Syria and Crimea we would not be where we are now. But too late. These thugs only respect and fear power greater than theirs. So strenghten our boundaries by getting eastern border countries into NATO and—if they pass "GO"—into the EU. Make the Russians life as unbearable as possible through every means at our disposal and learn to fight them in other ways. I feel for ordinary decent Russian people. But more important to safeguard ourselves first.

And keep our eyes on China. If anyone can discipline the Russians it will be them. So keep our powder dry there. Play the long-game and sway China towards pressurising Russia to grow up.
