Dear Alain,

Sadly I am beginning to think the only long term solution—and I’m definitely not happy with myself about it—is for Israel to totally occupy Gaza and expel the Palestinians who don’t like it (crass yes but more that likely or highly probably the reality). Israel has the might and will to carry that off.

That then places more onus on the surrounding Arab states to get their act together. And to determine between Iran, America, or Israel as to who they can best align with to optomise their future prosperity—and that of the rest of us!

The history of this conflict is so complex and driven by bad actors. But in my view a two state solution now won’t work! A new conception of Arab states and statehood might! But, hey, I know nothing!

For sure I (who of good mind doesn't) want the conflict to stop but sadly I think we are seeing the bully boys in Israel, this country, America, India, Iran, China, North Korea, Eastern Europe, South America, and Russia, having more and more in common which means we in the democracies are going to have to brace ourselves for an existential war or develop an exponentially expanded defence regime to prevent! And that’s not taking into account the inevitable conflicts that will emerge because of climate change!

At 67: boy did my (our) generation get the gravy train.

With my best regards, and thank you for such good articles. Keep them coming please!

Johnston
